What is AMTU?
As per Amazon’s own description, The Amazon Merchant Transport Utility (AMTU) is a tool designed to make sending files to Amazon and receiving reports from Amazon as simple as dragging and dropping files into a directory. AMTU runs automatically behind the scenes, uploading files from the relevant directory to Amazon and retrieving the results of the uploads. AMTU can also retrieve order reports from Amazon.
A common use case for AMTU was for a seller to manage the integration of orders, stock and price information between their Amazon account and their Enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. This way, data from the marketplace would directly update the “main source of truth” the company relied on, saving significant resources on reconciling these two databases, and avoiding costly errors, e.g., overselling products.
Why is AMTU going away?
In our other blog post, we explain in detail the circumstances of Amazon deprecating its Merchant Web Services (MWS) AP. As AMTU was part of that API, it was deprecated along with other functionalities on August 31, 2023. As a result, Sellers and their developers can no longer upload inventory/shipping feeds, or download order reports programmatically using AMTU.
What can you do about it?
To be able to access AMTU-equivalent functionalities going forward, private developers must migrate to the Selling Partner API (SP-API) by March 31, 2024. This migration is imperative to ensure their operations are uninterrupted and compliant with Amazon’s new API structure. The process for obtaining authorization to use the new API is long and demanding, while developing and maintaining proprietary applications drains resources from sellers, whose main passion typically lies in product development and meeting their customers’ needs, rather than building software applications.
