Question 1

What is the best way to convert COD orders to prepaid in Indian D2C without losing customers?

Accepted Answer

Knowing how to convert COD orders to prepaid in Indian D2C without losing orders starts with timing and trust-building rather than restriction. The most effective method is a post-order WhatsApp nudge sent within 30 minutes of COD placement, offering a specific incentive, typically Rs 30-50 cashback or free shipping, with a one-tap payment link. Conversion rates of 8-12% per nudge are achievable without removing COD as an option or creating buyer friction.

Question 2

How much incentive should Indian D2C brands offer for COD-to-prepaid conversion?

Accepted Answer

Rs 50-100 in absolute rupee value is the optimal incentive range for most D2C brands. Research across Indian ecommerce data shows that absolute rupee discounts convert 31-38% of COD-preferring customers, compared to 18-23% for equivalent percentage discounts. The incentive cost is justified when compared to the Rs 180-240 average cost of a returned COD order. Prepaid conversion at any incentive below Rs 150 has positive unit economics for most categories.
