Question 1

Q1 What is a 3PL, and how does it work for Indian D2C brands?

Accepted Answer

A 3PL manages warehousing, picking, packing, and shipping on behalf of D2C brands for a per-order and storage fee. It simplifies operations at the early stages. However, as brands scale beyond 1,000 daily orders, self-operated fulfilment using platforms like Base.com offers better control, accuracy, and cost efficiency.

Question 2

Q 2 At what order volume should a brand move from 3PL to self-operated fulfilment?

Accepted Answer

The breakeven usually occurs around 800–1,200 daily orders. Below this, 3PL variable costs are efficient. Above it, self-operated fulfilment reduces per-order costs significantly. With platforms like Base.com simplifying warehouse operations, brands can transition earlier while maintaining efficiency and reducing operational complexity.

Question 3

Q 3 Can Base.com work with a 3PL, or does it require a self-operated warehouse?

Accepted Answer

Base.com supports both models. It integrates with 3PLs via API for order routing and inventory tracking, while also offering full WMS capabilities for self-operated warehouses. Brands can even run hybrid setups, making Base.com flexible as an automation layer that adapts to evolving fulfilment strategies.

Question 4

Q 4 What is the biggest operational risk of using a 3PL?

Accepted Answer

The biggest risks are inventory inaccuracies and a lack of COD transparency. Many 3PLs operate at 88–94% inventory accuracy, leading to discrepancies. Using Base.com alongside a 3PL provides independent inventory tracking, real-time alerts, and direct COD reconciliation, ensuring better control and data reliability.

Question 5

Q 5 How does Base.com help in transitioning from 3PL to self-operated fulfilment?

Accepted Answer

Base.com enables a seamless transition by maintaining the same OMS workflows while activating warehouse capabilities. Brands only need to configure warehouse locations and processes. Most transitions are complete in 2–3 weeks, with minimal disruption, as the automation layer remains consistent across both fulfilment models.
