Question 1

What is a realistic picking speed target for an Indian warehouse during a sale?

Accepted Answer

A well-optimized warehouse with zone picking and WMS-driven task assignment should achieve 80-120 picks per hour per picker during sale events. Operations sitting below 50 picks per hour have addressable process or layout inefficiencies. The benchmark varies by SKU type, electronics and fashion categories with high item variety typically run 10-15% lower than FMCG benchmarks.

Question 2

How does Base.com specifically help improve warehouse picking speed in India?

Accepted Answer

Base.com provides zone-based pick task assignment, SLA-driven order prioritization, barcode scan confirmation on mobile, and wave planning, all integrated with multi-channel order inflow from Flipkart, Amazon, Meesho, Shopify, and D2C storefronts. This removes the manual coordination that slows Indian warehouse teams during high-volume periods and gives operations managers real-time visibility into throughput, error rates, and SLA risk.

Question 3

How much improvement does dynamic slotting deliver on picking speed?

Accepted Answer

Dynamic slotting of top-forecasted SKUs to golden zone bins reduces average walk time per pick by 30-50% during sale events. For a warehouse processing 1,000 orders on a sale day, this recovers 2-4 hours of cumulative picker capacity, without adding headcount or changing warehouse software.

Question 4

Does zone picking work for small Indian warehouses under 5,000 sq ft?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Small warehouses benefit from a simplified two-zone model, a fast-moving zone containing the top 20-30% of SKUs by velocity, and a standard zone for everything else. The principle of minimizing walk time per pick applies at every scale. The WMS configuration is simpler for smaller facilities, and the throughput gain is proportionally similar.

Question 5

How does picking speed affect RTO rates in Indian ecommerce?

Accepted Answer

Delayed dispatch caused by slow picking pushes delivery dates past customer expectations, triggering cancellations, particularly on COD orders where commitment to receive is lower. Each additional day of dispatch delay increases RTO risk by an estimated 8-12% on COD orders in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. Improving pick-to-dispatch time is one of the most direct operational levers for reducing RTO, alongside address validation and delivery attempt optimization.
