Question 1

What is the minimum order volume at which multi-warehouse fulfillment in India makes financial sense?

Accepted Answer

There is no universal threshold, but operationally, the model becomes worth evaluating when you are consistently shipping more than 200 orders per day to geographies more than 800-1,000 km from your single warehouse. At that point, the shipping cost differential between Zone 1 and Zone 4-5 pricing, compounded across daily order volume, typically offsets the cost of a second node and the OMS capability to run it. Verify this with your specific shipping rates and delivery geography distribution before committing.

Question 2

How does Base.com handle multi-warehouse fulfillment in India for brands also selling on marketplaces like Amazon FBA?

Accepted Answer

Base.com's 1,700+ integrations include Amazon's fulfillment models, including FBA and Seller Flex. Amazon FBA inventory is treated as a separate fulfillment node within the routing logic. The OMS can route marketplace orders to FBA when FBA stock is available and to your own warehouse nodes when it is not, applying the same proximity and SLA logic across both owned and marketplace-managed nodes.

Question 3

Can multi-warehouse fulfillment in India work for brands with uneven SKU distribution across nodes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and this is in fact the typical operating state. Most brands do not carry a full SKU copy at every node; they stock their fastest-moving SKUs at all nodes and slower-moving or high-value SKUs at one primary node only. The OMS routing handles this by checking node-level availability before routing. A slow-moving SKU only at Node A will always route to Node A regardless of proximity. This is not a problem as long as the OMS is configured to reflect the actual stock distribution accurately.

Question 4

How is return reconciliation handled across nodes in multi-warehouse fulfillment in India?

Accepted Answer

Each node processes its own returns through its WMS inspection workflow. The financial reconciliation, matching return credits from marketplaces against the physical return at the node, is handled through Base.com's accounting module. Return credits are tracked at the order level regardless of which node received the physical return. Node-level return rates feed into the warehouse efficiency dashboard so operations teams can identify whether a specific node has a higher return rate, which may indicate a packing quality issue or courier-specific delivery failure pattern at that location.

Question 5

What is the difference between hyperlocal order allocation and standard multi-warehouse fulfillment in India?

Accepted Answer

Standard multi-warehouse fulfillment in India routes orders to city-level or regional nodes based on stock availability, proximity, and SLA. Hyperlocal order allocation goes one level deeper, routing to the nearest dark store, retail outlet, or micro-fulfillment center within the same city to enable same-day or next-day delivery. Base.com, Unicommerce, and Increff all support hyperlocal allocation. This is the architecture that quick commerce and express delivery operations require on top of the standard multi-warehouse model.
